On April 26, 2018, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen announced, after reviewing country conditions and consulting with various U.S. government agencies, that the grounds for Nepal’s TPS designation on the basis of an environmental disaster are no longer met and as such, termination of the designation is required by statute. As a result, Nepal’s TPS designation will end on June 24, 2019.

On May 22, USCIS announced that current beneficiaries of Nepal’s TPS designation who want to maintain their status through June 24, 2019, must re-register between May 22, 2018, and July 23, 2018. Applicants will need to submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status and may also request employment authorization (EAD) by submitting a completed Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. Information about how to re-register and both of these forms can be found on the USCIS website

USCIS will issue new EADs with a June 24, 2019, expiration date to eligible Nepali TPS beneficiaries who timely re-register and apply, but it is possible that not all re-registrants will receive new EADS before their current ones expire due to processing timeframes. As such, USCIS automatically extended the validity of those EADS issued under the Nepal TPS designation and are currently valid for 180 days through Dec. 21, 2018.

This action follows termination of TPS for the following participants with the following termination dates:

  • Haiti (July 22, 2019)
  • Honduras (July 5, 2018)
  • Nicaragua (Jan. 5, 2019)
